'What is a Map?': A Campus Map
Our goal was to create a visualization of something that is known and break it down to it's most simplistic form in order to show relationships of space that may exist but aren't initially seen. This map of the University of Washington Seattle Campus is intended to be an example of figure-ground cartographic techniques.
The campus is separated by its “spaces”, each representing a different use. These singular spaces are isolated against an unobtrusive base layer to reveal and emphasize surprising intersections.
Spaces are organized into one of the following categories:
- Diversity Space: Buildings and places with commitments to social and educational programs that focus on recognition and learning.
- Social Space: Places built around or including significant areas designed to promote non-structured social interaction.
- Study Space: Places built to encourage individual and collaborative study and work.
- ADA Paths: Travel routes throughout the campus organized for disabilty access and movement, specifically wheelchair.
- Green Space: Places occupied by or devoted to plant-life.
